The top 10 resorts for late season skiing!

Thinking about a late season ski break? We don’t blame you. There are numerous benefits to skiing later in the season; long days with guaranteed sunshine, wide empty slopes and lively slope-side terraces built for long lunches and apres ski antics! Contrary to popular belief, late season skiing doesn’t mean you’ll be struggling for snow – in fact, some resorts claim that some of their best ski days of the season occur in the months of April and May. 10) Les Arcs

Due to its impressive elevation (with most runs situated above the 2000m mark) Les Arcs holds onto its snow well into the late season. Like near neighbour La Plagne, the resort sees its fair share of the white stuff, averaging over 5m snowfall each winter! And as there's more than enough skiing above 2000m, Les Arcs is one of our favourites for a ski in the late season.

9) Sierra Nevada, Spain

Sierra Nevada is certainly the wild card among our selection. As you'd probably expect from a ski resort in Spain, there's an abundance of sunshine, but don't let that deter you; with the highest accessible peak at 3,300 metres, Sierra Nevada is high - even by alpine resort's standards - now, couple this with great snow-making facilities and a unique resort atmosphere and you've got a golden recipe for sun, snow and sangria!

8) Davos

Top elevation: 2,844 metres
Base level: 1,120 metres

Fancy visiting one of the highest towns in Western Europe? Combined with Klosters, Davos is one part of six ski areas that total in a whopping 320km of terrain, meaning plenty of variety. With skiing up to 2844 metres Davos certainly has altitude on its side and, combined with an enviable snow record, enables the resort to stay open way into the middle of April - certainly one to consider for your late season ski break!

7) Val d'Isere

Top elevation: 3,656 metres
Base level: 1,850 metres
Pistes: 300 kilometres of piste

With a top elevation of 3,656 metres, Val d'Isere is one of the highest resorts in France and, combined with Tignes, the Espace Killy ski area offers some of the most extensive high altitude skiing in the Alps. Besides, with three accessible glaciers, you can't really go too wrong...

6) La Plagne

Top elevation: 3,250 metres
Base level: 1,250 metres
Pistes: 225 kilometres of piste

Most of the skiing in La Plagne sits between 2000m and 2700m therefore it's a reasonably snow-sure option when it comes to an April ski fix. Renowned as an intermediate's paradise, the extensive Paradiski ski area really does have something for everybody, making it an ideal choice for groups of mixed abilities, even if you're restricted to the higher slopes in the late season.

5) Engelberg

Top elevation: 3,020 metres
Base level: 1,050 metres
Pistes: 82 kilometres of piste
Open until (approx): 28/05/2017

North facing slopes, high altitude and the Titlis Glacier (which is open all year-round) all add up to make Engelberg a fantastic option for late season skiing. In fact, the Titlis Glacier enables Engelberg to have a rather extended season compared to other resorts, with the season lasting from early October through to the end of May!

4) Ischgl

Top elevation: 2,872 metres
Base level: 1,377 metres
Pistes: 238 kilometres of piste

As well as an apres ski scene second to none, Ischgl is one of the most snow-sure ski resorts in Austria, making it a real spring favourite among the Brits. With most runs sitting above 1800 metres, you can rest assured that they'll be enough cover to play on regardless of when in the season you go.

3) Tignes

Top elevation: 3,450 metres
Base level: 2,100 metres
Pistes: 150 kilometres of piste

Tignes is as snow-sure as they come and offers extensive skiing; sharing the Espace Killy ski area with Val d'Isere results in 300km of skiable terrain. Aswell as an enviable snow cover, the terrain itself is superb - especially for advanced skiers. When it comes to late season however, Tignes is consistently at the top of our list. In fact, Tigne's Grande Motte glacier is open for six weeks of the summer - enough said...

2) Zermatt

It's a well-known fact that, more often than not, 'high altitude' is synonymous with 'snow-sure'. Well, with some of the highest slopes in Europe, Zermatt certainly proves the rule. With so many runs above 3000 metres and outstanding glacier skiing, Zermatt really delivers the goods when it reaches the late season.

As the highest resort in Europe and certainly the most snow-sure resort in the Three Valleys, Val Thorens is a safe bet when it comes to late season skiing. As well as having two small glaciers, Val Thorens also boasts high and varied terrain - ideal for mixed ability groups. Furthermore, whilst most resorts in the Three Valleys close in April, the slopes of Val Thorens are skiable right through to May.
