Au Coeur du Village, La Clusaz

This Relais & Châteaux hotel was one of the first 5 star hotels to open in the French Alps and remains one of the very best. In a superb location only two minutes from the ski lifts, the wellness facilities of the hotel’s Cristal Spa (named for the healing powers of precious stones) are sublime and include a sauna, hammam, indoor pool and five treatment rooms. The Thief, Oslo

The Norwegian capital is a city with a great ski heritage. The Olympics staged here more than half a century ago still hold the record for the biggest attendance and many Norwegians live on skis. The great Tryvann ski area above the city means you can fly in, stay in luxury and pop up to the slopes anytime (it’s even open at night). There is also a ski bus opposite that takes you from the hotel to the Dolonne and Mont Blanc cable cars or it’s just a five-minute walk to the Dolonne cable car. Everything else you could want is here, even a smoking room if you’re a smoker. Explore the largest ski area in Austria and its best-known ski resort properly by staying in this luxury hotel that’s also home to one of the world’s most famous apres ski bars, the legendary Mooserwirt. The chalet-style hotel has a chic, wooden interior that has been recently created to meet the latest standards. Les Barmes de l'Ours, Val d'Isere

One of the best-located hotels in one of the world’s best resorts, Les Barmes de l'Ours, often visited by the rich and famous, has a prime position at the base of the Bellevarde Express lift. Design themes include American and Scandinavian décor and rooms feature Nespresso machines, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and balconies. One of the coolest and newest ski hotels in Europe is located way down south in Sierra Nevada. The ski-in/ski-out El Lodge has sumptuous chalet-style rooms and suites named after famous ski resorts around the world; some rooms also have their own sauna and jacuzzi. The 5 star Hotel Koh-I-Nor is a luxurious ski-in/ski-out hotel that has stunning views across Val Thorens. With three restaurants, including a Michelin star, foodies will be well catered for. L'Alpaga, Megève

For that feeling of a truly special ski break stay in an intimate, away-from-it-all 5-star hotel, a short carriage ride away from one of the world’s classic resorts, Megève, a destination you won’t find in the big tour operator’s brochures as it’s not a mass market option.
